Section of the Grand Départ of the Tour: Gernika and beaches of Urdaibai

On this adaptation of the official route of the Grand Départ of the 2023 Tour de France, you’ll travel along the eastern side of the Urdaibai reserve.

From Gernika-Lumo, the route passes through Kortezubi and under Arteaga Castle to ascend along the coastal road towards the beaches of Laida and Laga, then continuing on towards Ibarrangelu.

From here, it’s time to climb to Ereño and Nabarniz, where you’ll reach the summit at an altitude of 346 metres after an ascent of over 12 kilometres, with magnificent views. From Nabarniz, all that remains is to descend to Gernika-Lumo.

What to see on the route?

This route takes you through Kortezubi, where you’ll find the Cave of Santimamiñe, and the beautiful Arteaga Palace.

As for beaches, you’ll pass some of the most beautiful beaches in Urdaibai: the dune beach of Laida and the wild beach of Laga.

The highest point of the route is in Nabarniz, at the foot of Mount Iluntzar.
